Microbial diversity in the cystic fibrosis airways: where is thy sting?

"As unsatisfying as it is to admit that we do not understand what role decreased microbial diversity may play in CF lung disease progression, it cannot be denied. Furthermore, we should not forget that these ‘unnatural’ ecological niches we have created in the CF adult airways and in which nondiverse microbial communities reside represent an unqualified clinical success. While we believe there is room for improvement in management and even greater success in increasing CF survival, and recognize that increasing microbial diversity may prove beneficial in this quest, it is unacceptable to compromise hard-gained clinical success no matter how compelling current diversity hypotheses may be."
