Obesity can cause infertility

MANILA, Philippines - Having their own child is seen by most couples as the ultimate affirmation of their union. Sadly, the chance to conceive can sometimes prove to be a challenge when one or both partners have to deal with obesity, which, unknown to many, is one of the serious causes of infertility. According to Dr. Gilda Martinez, one of the country’s foremost ob-gynecologists, there is a strong link between obesity and reproductive problems.
“Studies have shown that obesity is associated with a general decline in overall fertility, with a significant relationship existing between excess body fat and problems with reproduction,” says Dr. Martinez. “Obesity negatively affects fertility since it causes menstrual irregularities as a result of ovulatory dysfunction, particularly in early onset obesity. Obesity is also associated with hormonal imbalance that results in anovulation.”
