OMAN has seen amazing developments in the healthcare sector in the past four decades. Due to the rapid growth, the country requires strengthening of the secondary and tertiary care activities along with resolving various issues through latest innovations in healthcare.
During the fifth decade of development the country needs to tackle critical issues such as quality driven healthcare system, control of cardiovascular diseases, malpractices and Omanisation in the private healthcare sector, and building on the achievements of this sector.
With dangerously high levels of hypertension, diabetes and obesity in the country's young population, the need of the hour is to focus on lifestyle diseases.
.....................
Most achievements in the healthcare sector are there for all to see. Life expectancy in Oman has increased from 49.4 in 1970 to 75.9 in 2010. The number of hospitals has increased from just 2 to 65 during the same period. Today, Oman boasts 65 modern hospitals with nearly 6,000 beds, a ratio of 2.1 beds for every 1,000 citizens and more than 242 health centres.
