Aerobic Activity Helps Older Women Maintain Muscle Mass

Study finds moderate activity instrumental in mitigating muscle loss during weight loss.

Strength training is one of the best ways to retain muscle mass as we age. But anew study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that aerobic exercise may help prevent muscle loss in older women trying to lose weight.

The combination of low muscle mass in older adults, a condition known as sarcopenia, and excess weight puts postmenopausal women at a higher risk of losing strength and muscle function than normal weight women with sarcopenia. Dropping weight is advised, of course, but older women who diet often lose more muscle than fat.
