The ethics of net neutrality

"As a manager, when considering what to do should the government not take over internet regulation, simply put yourself and your company on the front page of a local or national newspaper. Would you want to read a headline stating, “CEO Soandso Discriminates Against Small Business: Slowdown of eBay traffic in favor of retail store chains on the horizon this shopping season”? Given logical reasons, the public outcry from the result would still be shameful and damaging to the company. This test puts that practice in the unethical category as well.

Finally we apply the Wall Street Journal Model of ethical dilemma resolution. It requires us to consider “compliance, contribution and consequences”. Similar to Blanchard-Peale, it first checks for legality. In the case the law doesn’t forbid preferential packet delivery, a deciding manager must then think about how a decision will affect not just the shareholders, but also the employees, customers and the very community in which it operates and serves."
