Humana suddenly drops Baylor doctors out of network




"The decision by Humana also set off alarm bells at Baylor, where administrators were shocked by the change they say came out of nowhere. National health policy experts, too, call the decision both unusual and troubling because it extends the ways insurance companies are finding to narrow coverage options even as the federal health care law works to expand access for more Americans.

Orlowski said there have been scattered examples across the country of some marketplace plans severely limiting access to faculty doctors connected with academic hospitals. She now worries that trend is spreading to group plans as well.

"On the one hand teaching hospitals and their doctors tend to be the most expensive. But on the other hand they are also very good at complex care. They often offer a lot of services other hospitals don't," she said."
