"The average American consumed 3,500 calories per day in 1990. In the year 2000, the same average American 3,804 calories per day, a huge increase. Roughly two-thirds of U.S. adults are overweight or obese, and half of these are adults have chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure as a direct result. The average calories available to the average American increased 25 percent between 1970 and 2010, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture."
