Music heals. Exposure to the many different types of music has beneficial effects on the human body. It is fundamental to all cultures and is one of the few activities that incorporates the whole brain.

And the research shows that it's the tempo of music, as opposed to the style of music, that is related to the decrease in blood pressure and heart benefits. The tempo (speed or rhythm) of the music had the most substantial effect on cardiovascular relaxation.

In post-stroke recovery, a study in Finland demonstrated that a "daily dose of one's favorite pop melodies, classical music or jazz can speed recovery from debilitating strokes." Verbal memory and attention span "improved significantly" compared to patients who were not presented with musical stimulation.

Music also has been shown to reduce the levels of a stress-related hormone called cortisol. High levels of cortisol levels are associated with an impaired immune response. Music also boosts the immune function in patients by increasing the secretion of IgA, an immune-stimulating hormone.
