Abstract: Medical peer review is as old as organized medicine itself. The present manifestation of medical peer review is the result of a concantation of federal and state legislative and judicial decisions, accreditation agency guidelines, and individual institutional rules. While many physicians have some working knowledge of the medical peer review process, the process is complex and remains dynamic. The origins of, and history of, the recent issues shaping, and the potential future of medical peer review are discussed.
