School lunches make up less than a quarter of children's meals. Easy target, but not the magic bullet for childhood obesity

Not in compliance: NYC cuts too many calories in school lunches

"On September 4th, 2012, the New York Times released an article concerning the calorie content of New York City school lunches. Once again, school lunches are not up to standards, but surprisingly this time they are insufficient in calories by not meeting the 1994 USDA requirements for minimum caloric content.
New York City under the direction of Mayor Bloomberg has vastly changed the food and nutrition landscape of the city, trying to promote healthier and more sustainable foods. The altered school lunches came about as part of an initiative to increase the nutritional value of the lunches, not to reduce the calories. However, an unintended consequence was that as the nutritional profile of the meals increased, the calories subsequently decreased."
