Thousands of Weber kids say 'yuck' to healthier school lunches

"The changes for students have meant more whole grain menu items and fewer calories. Kitchen staffs have had to alter recipes to adhere to strict sodium and calorie counts. Harris said all breadings have to be 50 percent whole grain rich. She said that basically translated into not being able to offer desserts at school lunch anymore.
"Kids like the cookies and the cakes," Harris said.
The intent of the act is to help students adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce the effects of childhood obesity. As such, vegetable and fruit servings have increased while portion sizes of meat and breads have gone down. If students don't take a fruit or vegetable, the school district cannot be reimbursed from the federal government for the meal."
