"But we all know there's more to life than gross domestic product. Each quarter I write about the Fairfax-Lateral Economics Wellbeing Index which is a much deeper, richer measure of our national progress and welfare than GDP. It draws attention to things overlooked by conventional economic indicators. Like the value of our know-how – as our society and economy have become more dependent on ideas and technology this has grown far more important. The index reveals how the benefits of higher income have been dampened by obesity, mental illness and deteriorating job satisfaction. The wellbeing index now has figures going back a decade.
