Abstract
Although successful therapies for tuberculosis (TB) have existed for decades, this disease still kills approximately 1.3 million people a year. Successful treatment of patients is hindered by the long treatment time required, co-infection with HIV, and the development of multi- and extensively drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). All of these factors create a vital need for the discovery and development of new antitubercular drugs that improve treatment of drug-sensitive Mtb and are active against drug-resistant strains of the organism. In this article we describe the intensive efforts undertaken during the past decade by governmental, academic, and private organizations to overcome the barriers to TB drug development.
