Penn State Coach Says ‘It’s Time to Punch Back’

CHICAGO — A resolute Bill O’Brien took a breath beside the throng of reporters waiting for him here, packed five or six deep, and actually managed a smile. One reporter joked to O’Brien, the Penn State football coach, that he had to go through a gantlet at the Big Ten media days, and he was right.

“I felt like it was important to try to get out in front,” O’Brien said. “We took a lot of punches. Penn State has taken a lot of punches over the last six months, and it’s time to punch back.”

“If people were inside the building and understood what type of people we have and what they’ve gone through in the last couple days or six months, they wouldn’t say anything about us being dead,” O’Brien said. “We’re alive. We’ll be alive and kicking Sept. 1.”
