Abandoned on Bataan: One Man's Story of Survival [Paperback]

Oliver Craig Allen Mildred Faye Allen

p. 63

"As the first men got to the bottom of the hill, the ones in the lead, Capt. Kelly, Lt. Rice, the seven, one by one, raised their hands over their heads.  I knew immediately what was happening.  The Japs hadn't seen me and I hadn't seen them, and I had perhaps ten seconds to decide my fate.  Turn and run?  I still could.  Run where?  The Japanese were in front of us, to each side of us, and I knew they were behind us as the screams of the tortured Filipino still rang in my ears.  If I'd been jungle wise, if I'd known where the boat was and if I'd had a lot of luck, I might have escaped.  I believed then that my changes of staying alive were better if I stayed with my group.  If I were captured alone, my fate would almost certainly be that of the Filipino soldier.  So I, too, raised my hands and joined my companions in becoming a prisoner of war."
