SHORT COMBATS SARCOPENIA
"Senior citizens who love gardening, or any other hobby, too often find that joy slip away with each passing year.
“They start denying themselves the activity that makes life enjoyable,” Neil Short said. The story, he said, is all too common.
They’ll find it difficult to lift the bags of soil and plant pots one spring, Short said. Each year, the items will seem even heavier after a winter of being inactive. So they’ll do less gardening. They’ll feel tired more often because they’re using their muscles less, and eventually even walking becomes difficult.
They’ll think it’s just part of getting older. But that’s a myth, Short said. Losing the ability to do activities and to be independent is one seniors can easily avoid with the right kind of exercise that prevents and reverses muscle loss. Seniors can avoid the need for caretakers or the nursing home and keep enjoying the things they like to do many years longer, he said."
