Abstract
Globally, nearly a million people die yearly by suicide, yet despite research and prevention efforts, global suicide rates have increased in the past half century, and the World Health Organization projects they will rise more in the years ahead. Suicide is overwhelmingly associated with mental illness, mostly depressive disorders, though substance use and psychotic disorders are also significant risks.
