West Virginia leads the nation in obesity rates


"To West Virginia leading the nation in adult obesity rates. The State of Obesity, an annual report, says 37.7 percent of adults in the Mountain State are overweight. The data points out issues wit income equality, access to affordable food, and lack of opportunities for physical activity. The state also topped the charts for the obesity-related conditions of diabetes and high blood pressure.

To a report about 23 percent of the state’s workforce being in low- paying jobs, according to the West Virginia center on Budget and Policy. Those low-wage workers are more likely to be female, younger and less educated. Minorities are also more likely to earn low wages. The report said the rate works out to $11.59 per hour or $24108 per year for working West Virginians."
