Cancer agency board would be ousted under bill

Friday, May 10, 2013

The entire 11-member governing board of the state's troubled $3 billion cancer-fighting agency would be ousted under revisions to one of the most closely watched bills in the Texas Legislature.

A House committee late Thursday unanimously approved adding what Republican state Rep. Jim Keffer described as a necessary clean sweep for the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. The reform bill mandates other sweeping changes to the embattled agency and has already cleared the Senate.
Keffer was behind the original bill that founded CPRIT in 2007. The once-celebrated agency has since become the target of rebuke and remains under criminal investigation following several lucrative grants that were improperly awarded.
