"Human dignity is an issue to which different scientific and philosophical schools have paid attention, each remarking on the basis of their philosophical foundation (Mohammadpour-Dehkordi, Akbari and Aavani 2009). It also is a concept to which a great importance has been attached in the Islamic culture. “Human dignity resembles a shield protecting a great amount of divine and human values. Attention to this shield is among the heaviest responsibilities of Muslims in an Islamic society” (Ahmadi 1999).

Human dignity plays a vital role in maintaining the social order. A human society needs such an order to help protect individuals’ relationships and lead them toward perfection. One way to do so is to nurture dignity within individuals and help them identify the value of everyone. Those who preserve dignity for themselves strive to maintain that dignity—i.e., they respect the dignity of others even if doing so is only out of respect for their own interests. On the other hand, those who do not conceive of themselves as valuable will cause many troubles for others (Ahmadi 1999).

Essential human dignity is a concept upon which a lot of people agree, at least theoretically. Since this concept is both natural and global in nature, consensus about human dignity can be used toward the betterment of all. Here I briefly discuss human dignity and its kinds and its limitations with regard to Iranian medical code and ethics."
