"So how are we supposed to put weight on him and teach him healthy habits in the process?"

A growing boy

"Our son is in the 67th percent of boys who are not overweight. He was born underweight. His pediatrician stressed weight gain every time we saw her. Her advice: make potatoes, put butter on the potatoes and put cheese on the butter. Then top with more butter and more cheese. We did this and threw on sour cream just to make sure he was getting enough fat.
The result? He now likes to put sour cream on many things, especially potatoes. “Special snacks” before bed are brownies and doughnuts. Nothing “special” about watermelon, although he will agree to grapes sometimes.
I know he needs to gain weight as he grows. But the doctor’s advice doesn’t seem right to me. If he lives on a potatoes-butter-cheese-sour-cream diet, he will have cholesterol problems by the time he’s 10.
So how are we supposed to put weight on him and teach him healthy habits in the process?"
