Ebola scare as Siaya man is quarantined
"A 27-year-old man suspected to have contracted the deadly Ebola virus was yesterday quarantined at the Siaya District Hospital. The government formed a task force to advise it on threats by the disease, and put health workers on high alert. The Ministry of Health announced that surveillance had been stepped up, especially at border points to check the virus.
Ebola broke out in Uganda last week and has so far killed 18 people, according to the New Vision newspaper. Isaiah Otieno Akwany was rushed to the hospital after he started bleeding profusely from the mouth. Medical staff at Ting Wang'i Health Centre, where the patient had been taken after showing symptoms similar to Ebola virus, transferred Otieno to the hospital for specialised treatment.
The hospital's medical superintendent of health, Jackton Omoto, said the patient was immediately put in an isolation ward as a precautionary measure. Omoto said they suspected the man could be suffering from hemorrhagic fever, which is equally contagious. The medic said the patient's blood samples were taken to the Kenya Medical Research Institute and the Centre for Disease Control laboratories in Nairobi for analysis. "We are monitoring his situation as we wait for results," said Omoto."
