Solid step taken toward reforming cancer agency
Nelson’s reforms, welcome though they are, could be strengthened if combined, say, with legislation proposed by Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth. Davis’ bill would put CPRIT under further legislative review during the next session in 2015 and bar recipients of grants from making political donations to the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the Texas House, the three elected officials who appoint members to CPRIT’s oversight committee.
The legislative commitment to turning around the taxpayer-funded cancer-fighting agency is commendable. Reform will help restore more than CPRIT’s reputation. It also might renew the hope of progress against cancer that voters expressed when they approved the agency six years ago.
